Self Publishing: the key legal issues

David will lead this interactive session to address the key legal issues, pitfalls and solutions which all self publishers should know before entering into this new business model. There are different legal considerations and risks that ought to be considered. 

 

David is a partner at Burness LLP, a leading Scottish law firm, where he heads up the firm's IP and Technology team.  David specialises in advising on: software development and licensing; IT agreements and outsourcing; exploiting IP; e-commerce and the use of information. With a strong commercial focus, David is regarded for his "no-nonsense, diligent approach" (Chambers Legal Directory). 1515 - 1545:                  James Brooksby, Studio Head, Doublesix

                         

As a graduate with a Masters Degree specialising in Business James joined Kuju in 1995 and worked as an artist on MIA (PC). He was quickly promoted to Project Manager for titles such as Terracide, Halcyon Sun followed by a number of important prototypes and technology experiments that led to several signed titles. He moved on to become Executive Producer working for the action group, most notably leading the critically acclaimed Fire Warrior (PS2/PC/PS2Online). He was then promoted to the Studio Head of Kuju's Surrey studio, responsible for sales, forming strategies and preparing for the next generation, as well as overseeing Dungeons and Dragons Tactics, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic multiplayer followed by Geometry Wars: Galaxies. James then formed the new studio doublesix in 2007, taking the role of Studio Head once more. Since then he has lead the studio in developing its digital distribution strategy, becoming more than mere developer and moving into publishing, finding himself heading up doublesix's digital marketing strategy for its hit self published title Burn Zombie Burn! The studio is now self funding and soon publishing games on a range of platforms in the digital space.

About James

James will present the history of the hit game Burn Zombie Burn! How it made it to PSN exclusivity then move on to discussing the marketing that took Burn Zombie Burn to sell over 140,000 units on PSN alone. James will include discussions about Home, Avatar clothing, Competitions and importantly bring along some nice shiny graphs.

                                                Biog

Gideon was educated at Westminster and Cambridge. In 1990 he joined Saatchi and Saatchi advertising, and went on to win numerous creative awards. Gideon also worked on The Economist poster campaign and wrote for their direct marketing department. In 2001, while working for Swiss Re, he was asked to create a seminar on commercial writing. This became the springboard for The Copy Course. Gideon now works as a freelance copywriter and trainer for The Copy Course.
